Permanent Exposition in the Town Museum

Folk Culture of the Horažïovice Region

Parts of period costumes from the 18th – 19th centuries are on display, such as a cap, bodices, diapers and baby bonnets. One unique exhibit is a man’s cloth coat. The underpaintings on glass created in Šumava date from the same period. The complete Prácheò costume dates from the end of the 19th century.

Mineralogy

More than 500 mineralogical exhibits from eleven deposits in the surroundings of Horažïovice are on display, such as crystal, smoky quartz, spinel, diopside and corundum.

Archeology

The archeological exposition documents the oldest history of the Horažïovice region, from the Early Stone Age up to the 15th century. The exposition includes Paleolithic instruments, bronze axes and talents and proofs of Celtic and Slavonic settlement. Roman expansion in this territory is documented too.

The Middle Ages

The set of exhibits documenting the activity and development of guilds is very interesting. These exhibits include dated guild chests, funeral flags or banners. The mould for tile casting from 1677 has European significance. The art of the Middle Ages is represented by a Renaissance wardrobe and Gothic statues.

War History

The Hussite Wars and the Thirty Years’ War were felt strongly in the Horažïovice region. Some revealing witnesses are parts of cuirassier’ armour with bullet holes, a battleaxe and halberds.

19th Century

The 19th century was a century of great industrial development and overall flowering in the Horažïovice region. Photographs and documentary deeds are on display. The period atmosphere is evoked by Sunday town clothes, glass and pottery.

Jews in Horažïovice

It is on record that Jews have been present in Horažïovice since the Thirty Years’ War. In 1684, a synagogue and a school were founded. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Jews were a motivation force in the town’s industry. World War II meant the end of the Jewish community in the town. 118 Jews were transported to concentration camps, including women and small children. Only 7 survived … In 1980, the synagogue was torn down. The exposition contains preserved parts of the synagogue’s furnishings, documentary deeds related to the victims of concentration camps and a wooden tombstone from 1915.

Château Room and Blue Parlour

These two rooms belong to the château part of the Museum. In the room there is a six-pedal piano from 1827, inlaid furniture and Meissen china from 1730 – 1774. The Blue Parlour is decorated with paintings containing plant and landscape motifs. There are religious objects on display, among other things a pewter statue of Christ from 1623.
